According to this recent story on Good Morning America, airbrushing and other image manipulations are being attributed — once again — to a high rate of poor body image issues among tween and teen girls. The argument from the media side is that celebrities and products need to be made “attractive” to consumers in order to sell product. This leaves the other side asking how much is too far?
My sweet opinion on the matter is this: self-esteem, like beauty, is an inside job. If a tween or teen has access to positive self-esteem influences, they are more likely to view advertising for what it is — an artist’s rendering of what they see, don’t you think?
