About a month ago, Sweet Talk’s Cross Woodfield wrote this great post about TINSTAAFL (there is no such thing as a free lunch). On a re-read of it, as I often do with the posts on Sweet Talk, I thought about a story I’d seen on both Good Morning America and The View regarding a book and documentary by Sharlene Azam — author, filmmaker, and founder and editor of Reluctant Hero (a magazine for teenage girls).
Oral Sex Is The New Goodnight Kiss sheds a bright light on a dark and scary secret trend that’s happening within groups of pre-teen and teen girls from all backgrounds. Basically, these girls are selling themselves, and each other, for material gain.
As a woman, mother, and human being, this troubles me deeply. In fact, the thing that bothers me the most is that these girls seem to have no sense of personal value. Here we are, in 2009, and our young women think that the value of their bodies — and the misuse of them by strangers — is equal to a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes or a new iPhone.
WHAT? My gosh, is anyone else as upset about this as I am?
