I don’t know about you, but I’ve decided to place a big “bad manners” sticker over the past two weeks on my calendar. This thought occurred to me after I saw a Tweet from someone who lives abroad that simply stated: “OMG – has the U.S. gone crazy? Kanye West”
Joe Wilson, Serena Williams, and Kanye West: It seems to me that we haven’t gone crazy per se, we’ve just forgotten our manners.
Perhaps being rude became mainstream when television shows started depicting “normal” interactions in relationship as being filled with disrespect and criticisms? Could it be that the economic crisis has everyone just completely loosing their cool? Are we seeing the fall out from generations of prescription drug abuse? At what point did we all collectively decide that we can say and do whatever we want wherever we want and to whomever we want, just because we feel like it? Seriously, are we evolving or destructing as a society at this point?
Or, have we simply forgotten one of the best golden rules, which allows us to collectively keep our wits about us: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then it’s best not to say anything at all.” At least that’s how my grandmother explained it to me all those years ago. That and “Don’t do anything now that you will live to regret later.”
In my book, I think it’s alright to have an opinion, and to speak your mind (I sure do and am not immune to being rude at times), but — don’t you also agree — that sometimes, it truly is best to keep our opinions to ourselves? Saves us from diving head first into hot water for sure…
In your book of manners — is sorry enough, or do each of us need to seriously “check” ourselves?
