Dimitri The Lover: Frightening Reality or Hilarious Fiction?

By ChristiƩnne Miller

As I greeted my Friday morning in the usual way, a comment my cousin made on Facebook caught me off guard. It was a link to a couple of recorded phone messages, which got me off of my bra search and sent me on a Dimitri The Lover tangent. A few things about this guy both intrigues me and frightens me, so I thought I’d post on it to find out what you think.

One of the scary things about listening to these calls is that I’ve met (and been on blind dates with) guys who behave very much like this man. In fact, after an entire day of research, I haven’t found definitive proof that he’s not for real. In this information I found on Wikipedia, it seems they substantiate he’s a real person, but also support that he may just be a character in a viral marketing campaign for an upcoming Hollywood film.

Judging by the link to his personal website (warning: contains graphic material), as well as this official website for Toronto Real Men (warning: contains graphic material), I’m kind of in the middle on this one. Having worked in the entertainment industry for more than half my life, I could go either way. He’s either an Andy Kaufmanesque comedian, or someone who women should greatly fear as the potential guru to a posse of sociopaths, coming to a dating scenario near you.

Now, I’m curious to know your thoughts on Dimitri…
