Gender Preference Matters

Is it just me, or do most women prefer a female gynecologist? I find it a bit uncomfortable having a man who I barely know at all, see and touch an area so sensitive and personal. Now, that might just be one perspective but I wonder if all women care, which gender their doctor is. Most doctors that I’ve visited have been referred to me from friends and family, with that said, most if not all have been male.

Tamar Nordemburg from www.heath.discovery.com writes that fully “47 percent of women prefer a female Ob/Gyn , according to a 2001 survey by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). The survey found that 15 percent of women would choose a male, while 37 percent have no preference.”

Going to a gynecologist is a unique experience, unlike going to a cardiac specialist or pediatrician. Nordemburg quotes a women, “A male gynecologist is like an auto mechanic who’s never owned a car.”

Having been to both a male and female Ob/Gyn, I can honestly say there is definitely a difference in my comfort level. Thoughts?
