Some people divulge in Ferrero Rocher candies, others obsess about Gossip Girl and Grey’s Anatomy. My deepest indulgence? Platinum Weddings on WeTV. I find something about watching real people live out their fairytale weddings completely fascinating. Lavish, indulgent, and slightly repulsive, I can’t help but laugh and smile at the production of some of the weddings. And they are surely productions.
For those who haven’t snuck a peek at the show, basically it goes a little bit like this. We meet the happy couple, and learn of how they met. (The romantic in me loves that part). We then follow the couple, along with the wedding planners and venders, on their journey organizing and nit picking every detail of the ceremony and party. The half hour concludes with a fabulous over the top spectacle and a brief interview with the partially drunk, just-married love birds. The unique angle of this show is the expenditure detail. Everything from the flowers, location, bridesmaid dresses, table cloths, to food, cake, transportation, music, entertainment, and gifts, is written out in numbers. The audience at home knows how much everything costs in the end. Most couples on the show don’t have a budget so the extent of abundance is extraordinary, often superceding what most of the population would consider a realistic wedding.
Honestly, good drama is entertaining but reality TV drama can be really irritating. A wedding program that just shows the glitz and glamour, fairytale unfolding, and true dollar signs, with little coverage of arguments and annoying bicker, is a winner to me. I just want to see the pretty stuff. If you could plan your perfect wedding without putting a price on elegance, luxury, and convenience, what would you do?
