Good Enough, Mom?

A friend sent me this article on the age old quandary that many mother’s face — the feeling that their child’s bad behavior reflects their inadequacies as a parent. I then watched an interview with Uma Thurman about her new film “Motherhood” and decided to give a shout out to all my fellow moms in Sweet Talk land and say — RELAX, you are beautiful, wonderful, and you are doing just fine with your children.

I know as a parent myself, it’s hard not to feel as though everything is my fault — especially when I’m in a HALT (hungry, angry, lonely, tired) mode, which unfortunately seems to be the case from the moment your child is born (and something you spend the rest of your life managing).

The fabulous news is that we certainly aren’t alone. There are many sources of wonderful support (such as the article above) as well as the good works of physicians and psychologists who are on our side. The Love and Logic movement is leading the way in helping parents and teachers obtain the tools we may be missing, and support we need, to nurture and mentor the children in our lives. Websites like www.kidshealth.org give wonderful advice on how to keep track of the health needs of children of all ages, and www.allsafesites.com directs parents and teachers to a world of educational and fun websites that are considered age appropriate and “safe” from lurking cyber dangers.

So, let’s a take a nice, deep, breath, and release the tension of the day as you repeat the mantra: I’m a good enough mommy, and my kids are doing just fine!
