Getting Married in the Times

ringsBy Harlow Essex

I like cheesy romance. I admit this. I have written in the past about my not so secret guilty pleasure, Platinum Weddings, and I’m curious if others join me in my fascination for indulgence and all things lavish. Regardless, the celebration of two people committing their lives to one another is a pretty big deal for most of the population. (Or at least it looks that way from where I’m sitting.)

When Charlotte gets engaged to Harry in Sex and the City, she insists on having their wedding announced in the New York Times. Now, not being a native to NYC, I hadn’t realized that this was of the utmost importance. A must, to an upper east-sider like Charlotte York Goldenblatt. But the reality is, that many couples, every day lovebirds, have their weddings announced in the Times every day. NYTimes.com even has videos of the couples explaining the details of the proposal and the full back-story of their relationship. Funny, I guess I assumed only celebrities and recognized names had their ceremonies announced but that’s just silly. Why can’t every-day people have their stories shared too?

If anyone is interested in submitting a wedding announcement, (NY Times no longer does engagement notices), you can visit http://www.nytimes.com/ref/fashion/weddings/howtosubmitwedding.html

There are full instructions for submitting information for the newspaper as well as for the vows video portion online. Embrace the cheese!
