Holiday Food Survival

Let’s get through December without any regrets! With all the office parties, cookie parties or the holiday eggnog marathon, I know what my New Years resolution will be again this year. Keri Gans, R.D., a nutritionist from New York City, gives us five no punishing strategies in the December Glamour Magazine, to help us through the holidays.

Choose What You Really Crave. Look things over, and then have a reasonable portion of the one or two things that really entice you.

Always Have a Pre-Party Snack. Most people, myself included, always want to save up all my calories for the good food at the party. Showing up to an event hungry usually backfires. Have a small snack such a yogurt and a piece of fruit and you’ll be less likely to overeat.

Say No to Doggie Bags. Everyone needs to learn the words ‘no, thank you’ this time of the year. Many holiday foods are rich, so if you have them over and over, the calories will add up.

Nix the Guilt. If you overindulge, just accept it and move on. Just as what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…what happens at a party stays at a party and doesn’t have to turn into a punishing starve the next day ordeal.

Make Time for Exercise. Not my favorite! It’s hard to make time for exercise during the holidays because we’re so busy, but it will only be worse later. This is a time when you want to feel great and exercise relieves stress. If nothing else take brisk walks.
