Another Barrier

Princess and The Frogby Harlow Essex

Disney has arrived into generation Obama, according to sociology professor Darnell Hunt. Pocahontas was pretty epic for its time, confronting love and politics between a Native American girl and an English man. The Princess and the Frog is Disney’s latest feature length film about an African American princess and a French young prince trapped in a frog’s body.

Come to think of it, audiences have yet been exposed to an animated Disney feature involving African American characters. Surprising it seems, to have taken this long. Professor Hunt attributes the film’s context to America’s current political state, i.e. having an elected African American President with two young daughters. Young girls across America will grow up and look to the daughters of the White House as role models, Hunt remarks.

Randy Newman is on board as composer for The Princess and the Frog; guest appearance by legendary musician Terence Blanchard of New Orleans. In addition, (if I haven’t sold it to you yet), this film is directed from the same guys that did Little Mermaid and Aladdin… which are pretty much the best of the best Disney films ever. Release date is set to be this Friday December 11. Get pumped!
