I couldn’t resist the look on this poor woman’s face as it depicts something many of us experience during the holidays.
Let’s face it — the joys of the season come with higher stress levels, and these can lead to everything from over-eating and spending, to complete communication breakdowns with loved ones.
Truth be told, it’s perfectly natural to feel overwhelmed and experience emotional distress when demands for your time and social participation drastically increase.
For some, all you need is the permission to take 10 minutes to yourself. Seriously, set the alarm on your cell phone and go someplace where you will not be disturbed.
Get into a comfortable, seated position either cross-legged on the floor, or in a chair with your feet flat on the floor and your back straight.
Close your eyes and take five deep breaths. Imagine you are someplace warm and safe.
As thoughts try to crowd their way into your mind, keep taking deep breaths and see them as clouds drifting through a blue sky — imagine the warmth of the sun on your face.
You may even try to repeat a relaxing phrase such as “I am calm; all is well.” Every time you feel any type of tension surge, take another deep breath. Do this daily, or whenever you need it the most.
If you find yourself wanting additional support, try gaining some inspiration from the Daily OM or reviewing these 10 tips for coping with holiday depression and stress, compiled by the Mayo Clinic. Both can be a big help in transforming even the most challenging moments of the season into ones that pass quickly, and are replaced with enjoyment.
Remember: When you give yourself the gift of release, you open up the possibility to experience the best of the holiday season. Be well!
