Side Salad Gets Hammy

prosciuttoBy Yasmine Zapp

On a recent trip to a popular fast food restaurant with my son, I thought I might treat myself to a nice $1 side salad. No harm in that, right? What better way to say “hey body, I love you…have some greens instead of fries” for a hundred pennies.

I ordered our food and sat down in the kids play area. Time to dig in. Mmmmm. But wait, something was wrong. What was that smokey crunchy taste rolling around on my tastebuds? Ewwwwww BACON!

I love piggies but am not a fan of eating them. In fact, I have what is known as a PORK ALLERGY. Within minutes, all of the symptoms occurred: swelling, rash and a foul attitude.

I marched right back up to the counter and demanded to see a manager. I explained what had happened, and the manager actually seemed shocked because he didn’t realize that “bacon bits” were actually made from pork.

Are you kidding me? I’m trusting you with my food order and you don’t know that bacon is a pork product. I wonder how many other people who work in food service don’t know this and other important culinary tidbits.

Being dramatic, my first thought was I might have to become one of those people who carry food around everywhere they go for fear of eating something that would make me sick. Instead, I guess I’ll have to be more hyper-vigilant the next time I order fast food, and go through my food with a fine tuned comb, er fork. ;)
