A Relationship Sealed with a Wax

Leg waxingBy ChristiƩnne Miller

One of the most traumatic experiences I had when moving from Los Angeles to Middle Tennessee was leaving Liz, my esthetician and waxing goddess. I’m not kidding, and, apparently, I’m also not alone.

On Regis and Kelly this morning, Regis mentioned an article (I didn’t catch where it was from, sorry) in one of the New York papers about the very serious relationship a woman has with the person who waxes her. Kelly concurred for several of the reasons that ring true for me, and most other women–I would think.

Here at SweetTalk, we’ve talked about the funny and scary experiences anyone can have on the waxing table. But, I don’t know that we’ve ever touched on the relationship between a woman and her “waxer”.

Think about it: Depending on what type of services you get, and wax your beauty professional uses, these individuals become extremely intimate with your body and delicate lady parts.

You are trusting that this person is not going to burn or cut you or worse–give you some kind of infection from unsanitary practices. And, I’m sorry, but finding your perfect waxing god or goddess comes from research, personal reference, and (unfortunately) trial and error. When you have a waxing experience, you should:

  • Never be made to feel uncomfortable about your body
  • Always speak up if something really hurts badly or the wax is too hot
  • Feel as relaxed as possible to minimize pain (over the counter pain medication might help too)

That is why, should I find myself back in Los Angeles, Liz is one of the first visits on my list. Not only because she’s amazing at what she does, but also because she’s one of my dearest friends (love you girl, now and forever). And, the next time I take a trip to Portland, I’ll be gracing Urban Waxx with my presence (look out Shannon!) ;) .

For now, however, I can honestly say that (after 5 years of searching) I’ve finally found my waxing studio of choice in Middle Tennessee: The Wax Strip. They’ve also got locations in Georgia, so check them out if you’re in the area.

What about you: Who rocks your waxing world?
