I was recently reading over at Healthful Pursuits, a blog written by Leanne Vogel, a holistic nutritionist. She talked about her spring cleaning routine for the body and I completely agree with her that it’s easiest if you start now with a light cleanse then transition to a lighter spring diet.
As she puts it, “We’ve been hibernating in our houses, eating earthy vegetables, and surrounding our organs with extra TLC, it’s perfectly normal and expected to gain a bit of weight in the winter!” So it makes sense that spring would be the perfect opportunity to awaken our body, mind and spirit.
She’ starts off her cleanse with a yummy recipe for fruit and nut balls that are made with cashews, lemon zest, and dates (think homemade Larabars, gals). Check out the recipe.

I’ve often heard older people say “if they knew they were going to live so long, they’d of taken better care of themselves”. You can’t get back what’s done, but you can make the best of what’s left.
Life expectancy in this country has been rising steeply since 1990, and the National Center for Heath Statistics concludes that the older you are today, the greater the age you are likely to reach. Men and women who made it to age 75 in 2010 can expect to still be around in 2020 and 2021, respectively. At age 85, the odds are good that you’ll reach 91. There was big news recently that if you were born in 2000, you would live to be 100. Read More »

Weight loss is not only about exercise but proper diet too. People struggle so much with weight management that if they don’t exercise they end up either being bulimic or starve themselves. This, however, encourages fat to build up by slowing down the metabolic rate of the body.
Instead of beating the urge to eat, you can use it to your advantage by eating fat fighting foods. Eating healthy doesn’t have to hurt. Just a few simple switches can help you keep those extra pounds off for good.
For example stir yogurt in your tuna salad rather than mayonnaise. It taste and feels similar. Citrus is so fresh and tangy that you may come to prefer it over fatty butter and dressings that mask foods’ natural flavors.
Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world, which makes sense since it’s such a crucial ingredient in getting things done. It does more than keep you awake, alert and focused. Beyond boosting your metabolism, coffee also reduces appetite and contains heart-healthy antioxidants.
So if you haven’t already swapped mustard for mayonnaise on your sandwich, it’s time to make the switch. In addition to saving yourself about 100 calories and 10 grams of fat, you’ll also get a healthy dose of turmeric. A study in the journal Endocrinology found that the spice that gives mustard its color may also slow the growth of fat tissues.

We know that eating pink grapefruit can help stall the aging process. It makes sense, it’s fruit, it must be good for you right!? But did you know that “In the presence of the smell of pink grapefruit, women appear to be six years younger than their real age,” according to researcher Alan B. Hirsch, neurological director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago. Whoohoo, I use SweetSpot Labs products every day and the citrus galbanum and basil grapefruit scents BOTH have the essential oils from pink grapefruit and grapefruit. I feel younger already, lol.
Before you go slice one open and rub it all over your body pink grapefruit can also help with weight loss and other serious health-related reasons like cancer, so don’t just wear it, eat it!
Hirsch also found that other food smells – pumpkin pie, banana bread – may elicit sexual response. I better get baking!

If you suffer from heartburn or have acid reflux disease you know it is very likely to pay you an unwelcome visit to your holiday feast. Nothing could be worse than holiday over-indulgence. To help ensure the heartburn doesn’t spoil your celebrations, try the following tips.
You need to choose the right foods, skip the spicy, fatty foods which are known to cause heartburn. And try not to overindulge or eat too much at once. A major cause of heartburn is overeating, which can push acid into the heartburn-generating danger zone.
Beverages containing caffeine, carbonated beverages, and citrus juices also should be avoided as they can bring on this uncomfortable condition. Mineral water is your safest bet; even nonalcoholic wine or beer can pose an intermediate risk. Dilute alcoholic beverages with water or club soda. When having wine, drink white wine instead of red.
