by Brooke Kelley

Growing up, our moms always had a douche bag laying around, and no I’m not talking about our dads. So mom votes yes to keeping the inside clean, and doctors vote … NO … ??? How confusing is that, and what’s a girl to do!?

Dr. Alexandra Simotas, Board Certified, Obstetrics and Gynecology says, “Regular vaginal douching changes the delicate chemical balance of the vagina and can make a woman more susceptible to infections. Douching can introduce new bacteria into the vagina which can spread up through the cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes. Researchers have found that women who douche regularly experience more vaginal irritations and infections such as bacterial vaginosis, and an increased number of sexually transmitted diseases.”

But if you’re anything like the modern woman, although you have respect for the doc, you’re careful not to rest on that advice merely because the M.D. says it. You’ve got to see the proof for yourself to know. So here’s the logic we follow here at SweetSpot Labs. There’s a potential danger if you do, and there are no repercussions if you don’t. (How do you think Great Grammy did alright?)

The main reason women are concerned with this debate at all is mostly because of the problematic odor. So we’ve go the perfect solution. Risk free and fun too. It starts with SweetSpot gentle wash for external use only. That alone will do the job, but you’ve always got the Balancing Mist to spray on later while you’re chillin’ at home. And there’s always on-the-go wipettes for the times you’re out with your friends or on a date with the one you love.

Dr. Alexandra says, “Now, if you have trust issues, and you don’t trust anyone, at least trust your vagina. It knows what it’s doing–I promise.”

One of the reasons I love what I do is because I get to spread valuable information throughout the Sweet Talk community.

In a recent email, a friend asked my advice on some personal discomfort she was experiencing.

After turning 40, she noticed that she seemed to be plagued by vaginal itching and irritation whenever she and her husband were intimate — which, after the birth of their daughter, wasn’t all that frequent. Sometimes it would resolve itself, but other times she found herself going to her doctor for treatment. Being someone with an aversion to taking a lot of medications, she asked me if I knew of anything else she could try.

Not being a doctor, I decided to reference one. So, I opened my copy of Ask Dr. Marie, written by ABC News Medical Contributor Marie Savard, M.D. If you’re a woman and don’t own this book, I highly recommend it. It gives you comprehensive medical information on all aspects of anatomy and sexuality, so that you can carry on specific conversations with your own doctor to result in your best possible care.

Chapter seven of this book covers some of the most common and unusual causes and cures of itchy business in the sweet spot. It was in this chapter that I encountered bacterial vaginosis (BV). According to Dr. Marie, this is responsible for more than 50% of all vaginal irritation.

The main cause of BV seems to be a disruption in the pH balance of the vaginal area. One cause is a woman’s sensitivity to a man’s seminal fluid, which is alkaline as opposed to the acidity of the vagina. Another is douching, which also upsets the natural pH balance of your sweet spot.

Equipped with this information, I’ll share the advice I gave to my friend (in addition to a copy of Ask Dr. Marie). The issue she’s experiencing with her husband is one that may be remedied quite simply by increasing her frequency of intimacy with him — even if it’s only a quickie. The reason seems to be that the vagina is not only self-cleaning, it’s self-adjusting too.

The other suggestion is for her to abandon douching for the more appropriate SweetSpot Labs bidet-in-a-bottle and some on-the-go-wipettes instead. Even the Journal of the American Medical Association concurs that, since so much happens in such a compact area (i.e. sexual activity and going to the bathroom), using wipes to clean the vaginal area encourages better overall health and wellness of your sweet spot.

With all that being said, I’d say this itchy business has been thoroughly scratched!

To douche or not to douche that is the question. Vaginal douching is the ancient practice of rinsing the vagina for hygienic purposes. Still millions of women around the world continue do it, and a recent survey found that in United States 30 percent of women between the ages of 20 and 40 douche regularly.

So why do you think so many women still douche? When the vagina has its own self-cleaning mechanism — good bacteria that help to keep it healthy. First, douching disturbs this delicate balance by reducing the number of protective Lactobacilli, thus creating an environment in which bad bacteria can flourish. Second, douching can actually cause an infection by disrupting the natural balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina.

The risks of douching have seldom been clearly explained. But in fact some researchers suspect that douching can cause irritation and inflammation of vaginal tissues, the resulting irritation can make it easier for us to get STDs, bacterial and yeast infections.

If you are having odor problems, seriously a little gentle wash and water on the vulva, a good soak in the tub, and voila! Nice, clean hoo-hoo. And nice clean hoo-hoo isn’t aromatically challenged. If yours is having odor issues, or unusual discharge issues (some types of discharge are perfectly normal!), this means you should see your doctor.

So we know sex is fun, but is it necessary? The answer is simply, yes.

According to researchers, making love could be one of the few pleasures in life that is genuinely good for you.

Not only does sex boost your mood, but frequent lovemaking also boosts levels of immunoglobulin, key immune cells that fight infection. There is also growing evidence to show it not only boosts your physical well-being, but increases longevity.

A flurry of small studies suggests sex is as good for your health as vitamin D and broccoli. A healthy sex life not only relieves stress, improves sleep and burns calories; it can also reduce pain, ease depression, strengthen blood vessels, boost the immune system and lower the risk of prostate and breast cancer.

So go on, make love and live a long and healthy life.

by Sophia Marcel

A beautiful bust is in part a gift of nature but also in part a result of the care that you take. To men they’re mainly erotic – but for women it has a positive effect on our confidence.

Of course some sag is inevitable. Gravity, breast growth spurts in your teens and early 20s, pregnancy, breast-feeding, and hormonal changes all cause your breast to change shape. Any change in the shape of your breasts stretches your skin’s collagen and elastin, two components that make skin firm. This leaves your twins less perky over time.

Still, there’s one move that will mess them up for sure and that is weight fluctuations, which will surely cause your boobs to sag prematurely. Breasts are very sensitive to weight changes so it’s best if you keep a stable weight. The breast is the first place you lose volume when you lose fat hence, will lose even more volume if you lose too fast. While a great cleavage is nice, I’m pretty sure we can all agree that small and perky looks better than big and not so perky.

There are a few things we can do to protect our breasts such as exercise, how you sleep and wearing a good bra. For more tips read here.

But unfortunately for many the physiological effects of menopause do impact their enjoyment of sex.

During this time your hormones are giving you quite a ride, not only are you experiencing hot flashes that occur at any given time causing you discomfort and making you irritable, but there are also the night sweats. The last thing you want is someone bothering you wanting to have sex.

While the male sex drive is easy to define — and relatively easy to restore — that’s often not the case for women. The man gets a prescription for Viagra and he’s ready to rock and roll. If you are not ready to jump in and dance along, there could be real problems.

It is important to understand that these effects can be treated, but it takes some attention to health, hormones and mental attitude to continue to evolve sexually through menopause and beyond.

Sex therapists report the reality of the use-it-or-lose-it factor: regular sex, either with a partner, through masturbation, or a combination of the two definitely helps keep vaginal tissues more supple and moist, which is a problem due to low estrogen levels that cause vaginal dryness.

Ohhmm, yeah. New research published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine suggests that regular yoga practice can enhance your sex life.

You already know the ancient Indian practice of Yoga promotes greater flexibility, better muscle tone, a surefire way to release stress, ease pain, and maybe even enlightenment. But better sex? Really? You betcha.

Yoga may also trigger the production of sex hormones, increase lubrication, and boost self-confidence and sexual performance.

After completing a 12-week program that included about an hour of yoga each day, 75% of the women reported improvements in desire, arousal, orgasm, and other good stuff relating to sexual function.

Whether heating up your sex life is the main goal of your yoga practice or just a happy side effect, chalk this information up as yet another great reason to roll out the mat. Here are the major ways it works.

I was recently reading over at Healthful Pursuits, a blog written by Leanne Vogel, a holistic nutritionist. She talked about her spring cleaning routine for the body and I completely agree with her that it’s easiest if you start now with a light cleanse then transition to a lighter spring diet.

As she puts it, “We’ve been hibernating in our houses, eating earthy vegetables, and surrounding our organs with extra TLC, it’s perfectly normal and expected to gain a bit of weight in the winter!” So it makes sense that spring would be the perfect opportunity to awaken our body, mind and spirit.

She’ starts off her cleanse with a yummy recipe for fruit and nut balls that are made with cashews, lemon zest, and dates (think homemade Larabars, gals). Check out the recipe.

Chances are if you’re traveling abroad you will most likely encounter a bidet in every home. Here in the States it’s not the standard. I can tell you that once you’ve used one and know the difference between using one and not you may be tempted to go out and install one in your home.

I know this is not a topic we may feel comfortable talking about, but nonetheless it’s a necessary one. SweetSpot Labs has come up with a brilliant idea, a bidet-in-a-bottle you can carry with you wherever you travel. It fits right in your purse.

Imagine the thought of feeling clean and refreshed after a workout. Perfect for those of you who like going camping and don’t always have access to showers. It’s a great way to stay clean while on your period. Excellent for after sex, if you know what I mean. You can bidet every time you use the bathroom. How about after work? You’re going out and no time to run home to take a shower, perfect! New mother’s will appreciate this product too. Use it wherever you want to freshen up.

Thank you SweetSpot Labs. I love this product!
